Create an Ovoid-Curve Ramp

An ovoid-curve ramp is useful when an interchange ramp needs to tighten gradually within limited space. In this example, vehicles enter a larger R=90m arc, pass through a transition curve, then enter a smaller R=60m arc before joining the mainline entrance.

Create interchange ramps

This guide explains how to connect independent roads and build entrance ramps, exit ramps, and complete right-turn ramps for an interchange. The core idea is to combine straight segments, transition curves, and circular curves so vehicles can leave one main road smoothly, pass through the bend, and merge into another main road.

Create straight and arc roads

Straight and arc elements are the basic building blocks of road creation. Straight elements are best for simple links, while arcs are used for turns and radius-controlled curves.

Horizontal curve

Horizontal curves define how vehicles turn on the map. A practical alignment usually combines tangents, circular curves, and transition curves to balance terrain avoidance, comfort, and stability.

Minimum radius

Minimum radius connects design speed, superelevation, and available side friction. Smaller radii require higher lateral acceleration, which may trigger comfort or stability warnings.

Road creation failures and preview hints

Road tools communicate through temporary roads, preview lines, highlights, and failure text. If no preview appears, the cursor may not be hitting terrain or a road, a required road may not be selected, or a toolbar may be taking input.

Road design basics

Road design is not simply drawing a line. It balances terrain, speed, road function, construction constraints, and safety checks into a geometry that can actually be driven.

Sight distance

Sight distance asks a practical question: after the driver notices a hazard, is there enough distance to understand, react, brake, or avoid it?

Transition curve

A transition curve is not the primary control element that defines the route. It is a connecting element placed between controlling tangents, arcs, or other alignment units. A tangent has zero curvature, a circular arc has constant curvature 1/R, and the transition curve changes curvature continuously between them.

Vertical grade

Vertical grade is the most direct indicator in the road profile. It affects climbing performance, downhill braking, drainage, earthwork, and how far the driver can see.
